Rabbi Lynn Claire Feinberg, Norway’s First Female Rabbi, to Speak At Congregation Beth Israel

On November 14 starting at 7:00 PM, Congregation Beth Israel will host a special evening with Rabbi Lynn Claire Feinberg. Rabbi Feinberg became the first female rabbi in Norway in 2009. She was born in Oslo. She is an adherent of Jewish Renewal, and is the founder and spiritual leader of Havurat Kol haLev, the first Jewish Renewal havurah in Oslo. She is also a historian of religion, specializing in women and Judaism.

Her talk will be based on her current PhD work entitled “Ancestral Shadows– Memories of the Shoah transcended in descendants of survivors in Norway today.” Her work is based on interviews with children and grandchildren of Shoah survivors (both camp survivors and those that survived as refugees in Sweden). It includes interviews with those who returned to or settled in Norway after the war.

Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany during WW2. Close to half of the small Jewish population of about 1800 was deported to Auschwitz and only about 30 men survived. The remainder, around 1000 Jews, managed to escape to and lived as refugees in Sweden during the war years.

Rabbi Feinberg’s father was one of the camp survivors. He was arrested and deported to Auschwitz together with most of his family and relatives in 1942. They were all Norwegian Jews, descendants of Jews who arrived in Norway around 1890. He was the only one to survive.

In her talk at CBI she will explore how we might understand the impact of the Shoah in the generations that follow as a trajectory towards spiritual growth, creativity and integration.

Thursday, November 14, 7:00 PM: Rabbi Feinberg will speak at Congregation Beth Israel, 5716 Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel, CA 93923. The talk will be followed by a dessert buffe

This event is free and open to the public.
